It’s that time of year where we see rain, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and high winds fairly regularly. Not only can storms and high winds be scary, but they can also cause damage to your home. Most people know that storms and winds can cause damage to the roof of their homes, but did you know that your garage door can also be damaged in a storm? It’s not uncommon to see wind damage to your garage door, but most homeowners don’t think to check for it or don’t know what to look for. It’s important to check for possible garage door repairs after a storm.
Here’s what to look for if you believe your garage door may be suffering from wind damage:
- Noise. If you raise or lower your garage door and it appears to be making much more noise than usual, you may have wind damage. During storms with high winds, it’s possible for the garage door motor to be damaged, causing excess noise when raising and lowering your garage door.
- Problems raising it manually. Although most of us use the automatic garage door opener to open and close our garage doors nearly all the time, it’s important that you can raise and lower the door manually as well. In case of a power outage, you should be able to open and close the door manually. After a storm, make sure you’re able to raise the door manually. If not, the garage door springs could have been damaged. It’s incredibly important that you do not try to repair the springs yourself. The springs are under a lot of pressure, and if you try to work with them without proper training, you could suffer severe injuries.
- Uneven. If you notice that your door is sagging or uneven, this could be a sign that your springs are out of alignment. Springs can be knocked out of alignment during high winds. Although this may not seem like a huge issue, if the springs continue to be used while out of alignment, this will cause them to wear unevenly and eventually cause further damage to your garage door.
- Dents. Dents or other visible signs of damage are the most obvious sign of wind damage to your garage door. Visible damage to your door isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Visible damage to your door can cause the door to be out of alignment or unbalanced. If you continue to use your door, you could cause further damage.
